Paião was promoted from village to town in 1989, it belongs to Figueira da Foz county and is situated 15 Km south of this city. Until a few years ago, its habitants dedicated themselves essentially to the home tailor industry, reaching as many as 25 registered tailors. Apart from this, its population also worked in the agricultural field and the home shoemaker industry. Curiously, it is confirmed that Paião is well known as the tailors homeland. Also the name Camellias ( tree of Asian origen) was given in honour of the tree that existed in most of the Paião gardens, in the old days. Also for the fact that someone, at the time, compared the beauty of the dancers to that of the camellias (flowers). It was in March 1946, that the prestigeous RANCHO FOLCLÓRICO DAS CAMÉLIAS DE PAIÃO - PAIÃO FOLK DANCING GROUP was born. Having suffered some intervals throughout the years, it reinitiated its activity in 1985 and is currently at the height of its career. This group is composed of approximately 40 members, the majority of them being youth, between 15 and 28 years of age. Until 1985 the Paião Folk Dancing Group - Camellias only portrayed traditions related to the Figueira da Foz county. It was with the new era of the group that research was gathered on the customs and traditions regarding traditional clothing, music and local folk songs. This information was obtained from the older generation. From then on, the garments of the better known careers of the region were included in the group, for example: dressmaker and tailor in work costume and sunday clothe; shoemaker and farmers in work costume; rich person in sunday clothe. It was during this new fase that the group managed to get its national and international recognition, by performing from the North to the South of the country and beyond its borders. Since 1988 we have organised our own National and International Folk Festival, complete with an Ethenic Exhibition. |
